Polkadot natively uses 32-byte accounts (the SS58 format you're used to — addresses starting with 1...), while Ethereum and all EVM tooling uses 20-byte addresses (the 0x... format from MetaMask, Hardhat, etc.).
Since Polkadot Hub now runs smart contracts with full EVM compatibility via the Revive pallet (pallet_revive), they needed a way to bridge these two worlds. Here's how it works:
EVM → Polkadot (automatic/stateless)
When you connect MetaMask or any Ethereum wallet, your 20-byte 0x address gets automatically padded with 0xEE bytes to create a valid 32-byte Polkadot account. This happens transparently — you just use your EVM address and the chain handles the conversion behind the scenes. No action required on your part.
Polkadot → EVM (requires mapping)
If you have an existing native Polkadot account (32 bytes) and want to interact with the EVM smart contract layer, you need to explicitly call the map_account extrinsic on the Revive pallet. This creates a stateful on-chain mapping from your 32-byte account to a 20-byte EVM-compatible address. Without this mapping, native Polkadot accounts can't transfer funds or interact with contracts on the EVM layer.
